On May 22nd, 2012, Michael Hyatt, the Chairman of Thomas Nelson Publishers released a book titled Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World. I purchased the kindle version of the book myself and spent some time reading it and now I’d like to share with you what I learned from the book.
If you’re a blogger or read very many blogs, there’s a very good chance that you’ve heard about the book or even read it yourself, as Hyatt is not only one of the top Christian bloggers, but the book itself is really about blogging!
I want to give you a quick run down of what the book covers and then talk a little bit about how it relates to being and Undistracted Christian.
Michael Hyatt comes from the world of publishing, not only as a best selling author, but as an executive at a huge publishing company, so he comes with a vast amount of experience.
The book is not just for authors, though, it is for anyone who has a message that they want to share.
Specifically, the book is really about starting your own blog so that you can regularly get your message to people in the digital age.
Hyatt talks in great detail what he believes to be the important reasons for having a blog and then follows it up with details on how to build your blog and a community to support it.
The usefulness of the book depends greatly on your own level of experience and expertise, but there are helpful hints that even experienced bloggers might take home.
Because this book is addressed to people who may have never blogged (or never done it well) there are definitely some points where an experienced blogger or social media savvy person will want to skip over. At times it reminds me of talking to my mom when she first got e-mail and how excited she was that it went all the way around the world. Yes, mom, it sure does.
Still, I gleaned quite a bit from the book and for someone new this information might takes months or years to find through different blogging expertise sites.
Now what in the world does this have to do with being an Undistracted Christian (besides me personally being a blogger, obviously)?
Every Christian has a voice and a message to share with the world. Blogging is obviously the platform by which some of us share our voice and this book certainly would help anyone who wants to join in on the fun.
There are other key points in this book that apply to life in general, not just blogging, about things like customer service and how we treat people and how we use our time.
Doing this blog has personally helped me have a new kind of focus on my walk with Christ and starting your own blog might help you as well.
Have you read this book or would you consider reading it?
