You are reading “How Far Is Too Far For A Christian To Go When Dating?”, which is part of The Undistracted Christian Guide To Dating, Marriage And Family, A Blog Series.
If you were paying attention last week, you will know that I talked about the difference between Love, Fornication, And Adultery. For the Christian who is in the dating scene, looking for the love of their life, they should already know that fornication is a big fat no-no. Still, there is always this struggle between the flesh and the spirit and that can cause someone to want to push the boundaries to the limit, especially when it comes to sex.
So the natural question for a Christian single to ask is “how far is too far?” So let’s take a look.
Avoid All Sin Like It’s The Plague
The problem that we as people tend to have is that we try to find ways to compare ourselves to worse people so that we don’t feel so bad about ourselves. We may be liars, but at least we’re not murderers, right? Wrong.
Abstain from every form of evil.
1st Thessalonians 5:22
There is not a sin out there that is approved, otherwise it wouldn’t be considered a sin, in fact “…whatever is not from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23).

Walk According To The Spirit
Of course, our second difficulty is in finding the ability to avoid sin. There’s only one solution to this and it isn’t found in our own abilities, but rather in the power and strength of our God:
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by theSpirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 8: 13 (NKJV)
The only solution to avoid going “too far” on a date, is to walk according to the Spirit, not according to the flesh.
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares [us], and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of [our] faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12: 1-2 (NKJV)
Do you want to avoid going “too far” before marriage? Go after Jesus, not your selfish desires. If you and your date are seeking the Kingdom of God, then you won’t have to worry about going too far, you’ll be too busy with Christ to have to worry about the fine line of purity and lustful desires.
