#90 Decaffeination, The Prosperity Gospel And Other Stupid Things

July 26, 2012 — 11 Comments

If you like this post, you can read the rest of my Distractions!

There is a plague that is spreading.

It is worse than The Black Death, Swine Flu and Bieber-mania combined and it’s a silent killer.

Someone needs to speak up. That someone is me.

There’s Something Wrong With The World Today

It’s the idea that people want to drink coffee for the taste, not for the caffeine.

I don’t drink coffee, because I prefer to get my caffeine from  Mountain Dew, but I know that they are similar in one thing: no one starts drinking either because of how they taste, they drink it because it has a lot of little chemicals that make the things in your brain say “I’M ALIVE!”

I know, eventually you get used to the taste and you become a connoisseur and it starts to taste great and you know the difference between the eight hundred and seventy-three flavors of coffee available at Starbucks*, just like I know the difference between Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Code Red, Diet Code Red, Live Wire, Voltage, White Out, etc.

We can get used to the taste and eventually like it, but if we take out the main reason we started drinking it (the caffeine) then what do we have besides a bunch of empty calories?

If you took away caffeine from Mountain Dew you are taking away it’s manhood.

There’s Something Worse With The World Today

We should have seen it coming, Paul warned Timothy about it:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;

and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

2 Timothy 4: 3-4

How did Paul speak at church?

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

There are “pastors” who do the opposite. They don’t mention Christ crucified or the reason why He was crucified, sin.

They want to talk about how you should be rich, you just have to have the right attitude. They say you should be healthy, you just have to demand it.

The Gospel is that we can be saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, from our sins, to Heaven and eternity with God.

It isn’t about this world.

I need Jesus to save me from death, not a lack of indoor water slides. Tweet This!

Don’t change the originally awesome thing and then take away what’s awesome about it. Don’t let stupid things happen. Thank you.

Are you willing to not do stupid things? Please say yes.

Okay, Tyler. I found something about which I can disagree with you! ;) Well, the first part anyway. From the start, I drank coffee because it tastes good. The caffeine is just a nice side effect. Same goes for Mountain Dew, though Vault was way better (man, I miss Vault!).

I have a hard time believing you…no one misses Vault.

      • http://www.beingfilled.com/ Chuck McKnight

What!!??? Vault was absolute perfection in liquid form!

If that were the case, they wouldn’t have discontinued it! It wasn’t even Mellow Yellow!

Caffeine was definitely the reason I started drinking coffee, and I seriously doubt I’ll ever be able to drink it black.

Excellent point about pastors who refuse to preach Christ crucified too-it’s crucial, and it isn’t the Gospel if we leave that out.

I can’t drink it no matter the color haha

      • Susie

For me, it was a case of “desperate times call for desperate measures.” haha I’ve become accustomed to the taste with cream and sugar, but coffee by itself, no way!

“desperate times call for desperate measures”…why do I get the feeling you are not talking about the underoath song?

      • Susie

Maybe because you have a general idea of what my musical taste runs to? lol I’m actually really embarrassed to admit that, while I’ve heard of underoath, I’ve never actually listened to any of their music. Need to rectify that soon. Been listening to Red and Disciple a lot lately.

Ha, pretty humorous illustration there. You can’t separate the little parts without harming the whole!

yep! cars won’t run without an engine, right?
